Benefits of Long-Term Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustments and treatments serve the needs of millions of people around the world.

Adjustments offer effective, non-invasive and cost-effective solutions to neck and back pain, as well as a myriad of other medical issues.

Have you ever stopped to wonder how many of us suffer from neck and back stiffness or pain?

Apart from the obvious discomfort, simple daily tasks such as driving a car, crossing a busy street and picking things up from the floor can become all too challenging for individuals experiencing such pain.

As anyone who has experienced pain would know, having restricted movement can be debilitating and unfortunately, our busy world doesn’t allow for us to stop.

Some of the benefits of long-term chiropractic care include:

  • Chiropractors can identify mechanical issues that cause spine-related pain and offer a series of adjustments that provide near immediate relief. Following appointments, patients often report feeling their symptoms noticeably better.
  • When a chiropractor performs an adjustment, they can help restore movement in joints that have ‘locked up’. This becomes possible as treatment allows muscles surrounding joints to relax, thereby reducing joint stiffness.
  • Many factors affect health, including exercise patterns, nutrition, sleep, heredity and the environment in which we live. Rather than just treat symptoms of the disease, chiropractic care focuses on a holistic approach to naturally maintain health and resist disease.
  • Chiropractic adjustments help restore normal function and movement to the entire body. Many patients report an improvement in their ability to move with efficiency and strength.
  • Many patients find delight in the results chiropractic adjustments have on old and chronic injuries. Whether an injury is, in fact, new or old, chiropractic care can help reduce pain, restore mobility and provide quick pain relief to all joints in the body. Such care can help maintain better overall health and thus faster recovery time.

Have you ever noticed that when you are in pain and unable to perform regular or favorite activities, it can put a strain on emotional and mental well-being?

For example, the increased stress from not being able to properly perform a paid job. This, in turn, can have a negative impact on physical health with increases in heart rate and blood pressure. The domino effect often continues with sleep becoming disturbed, with resulting lethargy and tiredness during the day. Does anyone really feel up to exercising in this state?

Chiropractic care is a natural method of healing the body’s communication system and never relies on the use of pharmaceutical drugs or invasive surgery.

Doctors of Chiropractic work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. Should your condition require the attention of another healthcare profession, that recommendation or referral will be made.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

Many people seek chiropractic care when their back goes out or their neck tightens up.

But how does this form of care actually work? What are the benefits of receiving chiropractic care for nerve dysfunction compared with other healthcare options?

Let’s take a look!

First, let’s discuss how the nervous system “works.”

We have three divisions of the nervous system: the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems.

The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord, and it’s essentially the main processing portion of the nervous system. The spinal cord is like a multi-lane highway that brings information to the brain for processing (sensory division) and returns information back to the toes, feet, legs and upper extremities from which the information originated (motor division).

For example, hiking on a mountain trail or simply walking requires constant input to and from the CNS so we can adjust our balance accordingly and not fall. These “sensory-motor pathways” are essential and allow us to complete our daily tasks in an efficient, safe manner as information is constantly bouncing back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes a similar sensory/motor “two-way street” system relaying information back and forth from our toes/feet/legs and fingers/hands/arms to the spinal cord (CNS). And if this isn’t complicated enough, we also have “reflexes” that, for example, allow us to QUICKLY pull our hand away from a hot stove to minimize burning our fingers.

Reflexes allow the information to “skip” the brain’s processing part so quicker reactions can occur.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions that basically “run” our automatic (organ) functions like breathing, heart rate, digestion, hormonal output, and more. There is constant communication between the ANS, PNS, and CNS that allow us to function in a normal, balanced way… unless something disrupts them.

There are obvious conditions that interfere with this communication process that includes (but are not limited to) diabetes (with neuropathy), frost bitten or burned fingers, peripheral nerve damage from conditions like carpal/cubital tunnel syndromes, thoracic outlet syndrome, and/or pinched nerves in the neck, mid-back, low-back spinal regions, as well as conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, after a stroke (spinal cord or brain), and after trauma with resulting fractures where nerve, spinal cord, and/or brain damage can occur. These are “obvious” reasons for delayed or blocked neurotransmission.

There are many other less obvious injuries or conditions that can result in faulty neuromotor patterns and nerve transmission of which chiropractic services can benefit.

The “subluxation complex” is a term some chiropractors use to describe the compromised nerve transmission that may occur if a nerve is compressed or irritated due to faulty bone or joint position along the nerve’s course. Reducing such nerve compression typically allows for a restoration of function. A good illustration of this is a patient who suffers from a herniated disk in the neck with numbness and tingling down the arm to the hand. The goal of treatment (for all healthcare professionals) is to remove the pinch of the nerve.

To realize this goal, Doctors of Chiropractic utilize spinal manipulation and mobilization in addition to other non-surgical, non-drug approaches that may include exercises, nutritional advice, home-care such as a cervical traction unit, and other anti-inflammatory measures (ice, modalities like low level and class IV laser, electric stimulation, pulsed magnetic field, and more).

Given the minimal side-effect risks and well-reported benefits, it only makes sense to try chiropractic FIRST and if you’re not satisfied, your doctor will help you find the next level of care.

A Permanent Cure for Back Pain?

A Permanent Cure for Back Pain?

Back pain is one of the common complaints causing us distress and is severe enough to keep us away from our day to day work. It affects the 80% of Americans at least once in their lifetime. Back pain is easily in the top 5 reasons people to visit the doctor. The sedentary lifestyle, faulty food habits, obesity are increasingly affecting the back of people and leading to some or other issues.

To find a cure for back pain, following points are very important to know.

What causes back pain?

Back pain often starts gradually and with low intensity which increases in severity over a period of time if not paid attention to treat it.

In more than 50% of cases of back pain, the major reason is faulty habits, bad posture, and obesity. All of these gives undue pressure on the vertebral column or back muscles and gives rise to back pain. In rest of the cases the accidental injury, muscle straining or sports injuries, some diseases of the musculoskeletal system produces symptoms of back pain.

The muscles of back become very stiff and spinal joints become less mobile and smoothness of the joint movement decreases due to all the above reasons. So it gives rise to back pain in that particular area.

“Prevention is better than cure”

Back pain is many times preventable with few lifestyle changes are made. Fitness exercises and weight management are directly connected to our back care.

Dramatic relief of back pain is noted following weight loss in obese patients. For those who are living sedentary life because of the tight schedules of job and family life suffers from back pain more often.

To prevent back pain it is advised to engage in some sports activity or mild exercises at least 3 times a week.

Home care for back pain

  • Have proper rest and good sleep at least 6 to 8 hours per day.
  • Do some stretching exercises on waking up.
  • Have hot water or ice fomentation on the back.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting, have some movements or walk few steps in between.
  • Change of mattress in terms of soft to hard. Lying on a hard surface gives better support to the spine and relieves back pain.
  • Use proper posture while at home in sitting, walking or lying especially when using the computer or watching TV.

Get help from your local Chiropractor

Chiropractors are widely used as the main treatment for all types of back pain. This treatment method is directly focused on muscles, ligaments, joints, bones, and connective tissues etc., which are responsible for the production of pain, so the result is quick and long lasting.

The chiropractor uses techniques by manual adjustments of the affected muscles and structures to treat the back pain. The unique method of spinal decompression therapy has been proven extremely useful in the treatment of the variety of back pain. It does not give temporary relief but permanent cure from back pain in many of the cases.

The major benefit is that by chiropractic treatment one can definitely keep oneself away from the spinal surgery to relieve back pain. It produces favorable conditions for the body tissue to heal naturally so assists in a permanent cure for back pain.

So, in short, do not ignore the early symptoms of back pain because if overlooked today it might be more distressing tomorrow. Get early help and live pain-free!
